Market share
≈55–60% of electric passenger vehicle segment (FY24, claimed; declining from prior highs amid rising competition)
EV market stance
Tata Motors is the established market leader in India's electric passenger vehicle space, competing across mass-market and emerging premium segments.
EV strategy
Tata Motors is India's dominant electric passenger vehicle maker, operating its EV business through a dedicated subsidiary — Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEML). The company pioneered mass-market EV adoption in India with the Nexon EV and has since expanded its lineup to include the Tiago EV, Punch EV, and Curvv EV, covering entry-level hatchbacks through SUV coupes. Its multi-platform approach spans the Ziptron powertrain architecture for near-term models and the premium Avinya platform — a ground-up EV architecture — for future flagship products.
Tata Motors has announced plans (claimed) to invest ₹16,000–18,000 crore in its EV business between FY25 and FY30, targeting five new EV launches by FY2030, including models from the premium Avinya range. A key strategic pillar is achieving price parity between EVs and equivalent petrol vehicles by around 2030, driven by falling battery costs and localisation of cell chemistry. The company is simultaneously expanding its public and captive charging network to reduce range anxiety and accelerate mainstream adoption.
On the commercial vehicle side, Tata Motors is also electrifying its bus and truck segments, supplying electric buses to state transport undertakings under government procurement programmes. The brand holds a commanding share of India's electric passenger vehicle segment and is working to defend that leadership against intensifying competition from Hyundai, MG, and emerging domestic players. Its strategy combines volume-oriented affordable EVs with a longer-term push into premium and luxury electric segments through the Avinya sub-brand.
