EV range, charging and running cost in India

Certified range figures in India come from a lab cycle, and most drivers see noticeably less on a highway. Range, the charging port and the battery warranty matter more to EV owners than any single feature.

The guides here set certified range next to independent real-world tests, explain which EVs charge on CCS2 DC chargers, and work out ownership cost from official prices, warranty terms and service schedules.

The guides

  1. Electric cars with the best real-world range in India: certified range, tested range and the cheapest variant at each step

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has the best independently tested real-world range in India at 501 km (Autocar India) but costs Rs 55.71 lakh. Under Rs 30 lakh the tested order is the Mahindra XEV 9S 79 kWh at 478 km, XEV 9e at 456 km, BE 6 at 449 km, Tata Harrier EV 75 kWh at 438 km (CarWale) and Hyundai Creta Electric at 432 km. The cheapest variant certified past 500 km is the Tata Curvv EV Accomplished X 55 at Rs 17.19 lakh (502 km), past 540 km the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara Zeta at Rs 17.94 lakh (543 km, no independent test yet), and past 700 km the Mahindra BE 6 FE at Rs 24.45 lakh (708 km). Ex-showroom prices checked 5 November 2026.

  2. Which Electric SUVs Use a CCS2 Charging Port in India?

Practically every electric SUV sold in India uses a CCS2 charging port, including the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, Tata Nexon EV and Curvv EV, Mahindra XEV 9e and XEV 9S, Hyundai Creta Electric, Kia Syros EV, MG Windsor EV and BYD Sealion 7. CCS2 carries DC fast charging and includes a Type 2 socket for AC. What differs is power: from 45 kW on the smaller MG Windsor EV to 150 kW on the BYD Sealion 7 and up to 390 kW on the Porsche Cayenne Electric.

  3. The cheapest way to own an electric car or SUV in India: outright price, battery subscription and cost per km compared

The cheapest electric car to own outright in India is the Tata Tiago EV Smart 19 at Rs 6.99 lakh ex-showroom and the cheapest electric SUV is the Tata Punch EV Smart 30 at Rs 9.79 lakh. On battery subscription the MG Comet EV starts at Rs 4.99 lakh plus Rs 3.3 per km, the Punch EV at Rs 6.49 lakh plus Rs 2.6 per km, the Kia Syros EV at Rs 7.99 lakh plus Rs 3.3 per km and the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara Delta at an introductory Rs 10.99 lakh plus Rs 3.99 per km against Rs 16.19 lakh outright. Over five years at 1,000 km a month the subscription is cheaper on every car compared; at 2,000 km a month buying outright wins on the Comet, Windsor and ZS EV.

  4. Which Electric SUVs in India Have the Lowest Maintenance Cost?

The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is the easiest electric SUV to maintain in India by network reach — 5,780+ authorized touchpoints across nearly 3,000 cities, more than 3x any other EV brand. The Mahindra XUV400 has the lowest scheduled invoice at Rs 31,387 over 10 years (Rs 0.31/km), but with roughly 800 service centers nationally, the cheaper schedule sheet is partly offset by harder access. The Tata Nexon EV (Rs 74,733 over 10 years) offsets higher service cost with a lifetime battery warranty. The MG ZS EV costs Rs 55,092 over 5 years. All are 60-70% cheaper than petrol SUVs, but service network depth varies 10x across brands.
