For a family buying an electric SUV under Rs 20 lakh, the best all-round choice is the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara 61 kWh: the Zeta at Rs 17,94,000 is certified at 543 km, sits on a 2,700 mm wheelbase with a sliding rear seat, and every trim has seven airbags and a five-star Bharat NCAP rating. The Mahindra BE 6 One goes further (573 km, 2,775 mm wheelbase) but only just fits at Rs 19,45,000 without a wall charger and has no ADAS. The MG Windsor EV has the biggest boot (604 litres) and the Tata Curvv EV the best balance of boot, range and price (500 litres, 502 km, Rs 17,19,000). Prices are ex-showroom, checked October 2026.

Most "under Rs 20 lakh" lists rank on range or features. This one looks at what a family of four or five lives with every day: how much cabin and boot you get, how far the car goes on a charge, and whether the crash rating covers the variant you can afford. For feature-led rankings, see our lists on ADAS and fast charging under Rs 20 lakh and the broader best electric SUVs under Rs 20 lakh.

Two cars miss the ceiling entirely: the Tata Harrier EV starts at Rs 21,79,000 and the Mahindra XEV 9e at Rs 21,90,000. The BE 6 qualifies on one variant only, and only without its charger: the same One costs Rs 20,20,000 with Mahindra's 11.2 kW wall charger, and the next trim, the Two, is Rs 20,95,000. The e Vitara Alpha qualifies in single-tone paint at Rs 19,99,000; the dual-tone Alpha at Rs 20,21,000 does not.

Our picks for a family

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara: the most complete family car under the cap

Among the 4.3 metre SUVs here, only the e Vitara and the Windsor fit every trim under Rs 20 lakh, and the e Vitara does it with a 61 kWh pack on two of the three. That matters for families because the useful kit is spread across the range rather than locked behind a price jump. From the base Delta, Maruti's brochure lists rear AC vents, a rear seat that slides and reclines in ten steps in a 60:40 split with 40:20:40 folding backrests, ISOFIX anchorages, a rear seat reminder and seven airbags including a driver knee airbag. Bharat NCAP gave it five stars, with 31.49 of 32 for adults and 43 of 49 for children, and the rating covers the Delta, Zeta and Alpha.

The 61 kWh Zeta (Rs 17,94,000) is the variant we would buy: 543 km certified, a wireless charger and a parcel shelf over the Delta. The Alpha (Rs 19,99,000) adds ventilated front seats, a 360 view camera and Level 2 ADAS with adaptive cruise control.

The weaknesses are worth stating. Maruti does not publish a boot volume for the e Vitara, so we cannot rank it on luggage space. At 4,275 mm it is the shortest of the 4.3 m class here. Its 45 minute DC stop for 10 to 80 percent needs a charger of at least 70 kW, more than twice the BE 6's quoted 20 minutes (Mahindra quotes a 20 to 80 percent window, so the comparison is not exact). Battery-as-a-service is offered through select financiers according to the brochure, but Maruti publishes no BaaS rate, so we quote the full price.

Mahindra BE 6 One: the most range and the longest wheelbase

On paper the BE 6 One is the strongest car in the table: 573 km certified, a 2,775 mm wheelbase, a 455 litre boot plus a 45 litre frunk, and a 20 to 80 percent charge in 20 minutes on a 140 kW charger. Mahindra's brochure gives the One six airbags, ESP, all-wheel disc brakes, cruise control and automatic climate control with rear AC vents. Bharat NCAP's five-star rating lists the One.

What it costs you as a family car: no ADAS at all on this trim (Level 2 arrives at the Three+), a sloping coupe roofline, and no room for upgrades under the cap. If you want the wall charger from Mahindra, you are over Rs 20 lakh.

MG Windsor EV: the biggest boot and the comfiest rear seat

The Windsor carries the most luggage. MG's brochure gives 604 litres on the Excite and Exclusive and 579 litres on the Essence and Pro trims, on a 2,700 mm wheelbase, and MG says the rear seats recline to 135 degrees. The Exclusive adds a 360 degree camera, and the Essence Pro (Rs 19,14,800) adds Level 2 ADAS with adaptive cruise, V2L and a powered tailgate.

The compromises are range and charging. The 52.9 kWh Pro versions are certified at 449 km and quote about 50 minutes for 20 to 80 percent on a 60 kW charger; the 38 kWh versions manage 332 km. We found no Windsor result on bncap.in. MG also lists battery-as-a-service prices from Rs 9.99 lakh plus Rs 4.3 per km, if you prefer that model.

Tata Curvv EV: the value pick

The Curvv EV Accomplished X 55 gets a 500 litre boot and a 502 km certified range for Rs 17,19,000, Rs 75,000 less than the e Vitara Zeta. Tata's brochure also prints a C75 estimate of 400 to 425 km, the range it expects 75 percent of owners to see, which is more candid than most makers. The Empowered X 55 at Rs 19,39,000 adds Level 2 ADAS with adaptive cruise and stop and go. Its five-star Bharat NCAP rating was extended to the X variants in March 2026. The shorter 2,560 mm wheelbase and coupe roof mean less rear headroom than a boxier SUV. Tata did not render a price for the Empowered X #DARK edition, so we have left it out.

Hyundai Creta Electric, Nexon EV, XUV 3XO EV and Punch EV

The Creta Electric starts at Rs 18,02,800 for the 42 kWh pack, certified at 420 km. Hyundai's site shows only that starting price, so we could not confirm whether the 510 km long-range version fits under Rs 20 lakh. Its brochure lists Smart Cruise Control and lane following only on the Excellence trims, and we found no Bharat NCAP result for it.

The Nexon EV, XUV 3XO EV and Punch EV are a size down: all are under 4 metres long, with boots between 350 and 366 litres. For a family of four on a budget, the Nexon EV Creative 45 (Rs 14,34,000, 489 km, five-star rating) is the pick of the three. The Punch EV 40 kWh is certified at 468 km and rated five stars in its 2026 Bharat NCAP test, but at 3,880 mm long it is a city car first.

How we built this list and what we did not verify

Dimensions, boot volumes, airbags, battery sizes, certified ranges and charging times come from each manufacturer's own brochure: Maruti's September 2026 e Vitara brochure, Mahindra's BE 6 and XUV 3XO EV brochures, MG's Windsor EV brochure, Tata's October 2026 Nexon EV and Curvv EV brochures and its June 2026 Punch EV brochure, and Hyundai's Creta Electric brochure. Prices are from each maker's own price page or variant listing as rendered in October 2026. The e Vitara Alpha price is the single-tone figure. Safety ratings and the variants they cover were read from each car's page on bncap.in.

What we could not verify:

  • Boot volume for the e Vitara and the Creta Electric, which neither maker publishes in its brochure.
  • Variant prices for the Creta Electric above its starting price.
  • Prices for Tata's #DARK editions, which its price pages did not display.
  • Real-world range. Certified MIDC figures run well above what families see with a full load and the air conditioning on; our real-world range list under Rs 20 lakh covers tested numbers.
  • Rear-seat space beyond wheelbase, which no brochure measures in a comparable way. Take the family for a test sit.
