EV market stance
Hyundai is an established EV leader in India's passenger car segment, competing across both the mass-market and premium tiers with locally assembled and imported electric models.
EV strategy
Hyundai Motor India has positioned itself as one of the leading EV players in the Indian passenger car segment, having launched the Ioniq 5 (CBU), Kona Electric, and the locally assembled Creta Electric. The Creta Electric, launched in early 2024, marked a pivotal shift toward mass-market EV accessibility and is assembled at Hyundai's Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu, where the company has also begun local assembly of EV battery packs.
As part of its 2030 roadmap announced at the CEO Investor Day, Hyundai has committed a claimed $5 billion investment in India by 2030, covering manufacturing expansion, R&D, and EV infrastructure. The company plans to launch 26 new vehicles in India — including its first hybrid model and a locally designed EV — and is expanding its Pune plant to add claimed 250,000 units of annual capacity. A compact electric SUV based on the global Inster platform is also in the pipeline, targeting a price point below the Creta Electric to compete with Tata Punch EV and Nexon EV.
Hyundai's India EV strategy rests on three pillars: localisation of supply chains to reduce costs, a tiered product portfolio spanning affordable to premium EVs, and leveraging India as a global export hub. The brand is also investing in Level 2 ADAS, OTA software updates, and 800V fast-charging technology for future models. India has been explicitly named a key pillar in Hyundai's global electrification strategy through 2030.
On the premium end, Hyundai continues to offer the Ioniq 5 and has announced the Ioniq 6 for select markets, with the Ioniq 9 flagship SUV representing the brand's global EV ambitions. The company's dual approach — globally developed platforms for premium buyers and India-specific, locally built EVs for the mass market — reflects a comprehensive long-term commitment to India's rapidly growing EV ecosystem.
