Which Electric SUVs Offer 7 Airbags in India? (2026)

Seven airbags means the standard six plus one more, almost always a driver knee airbag. Five of these nine models fit seven to every variant and four start at six, so the brochure figure describes the model, not your trim. The BYD Atto 3 is the exception on placement: its seventh is a front centre airbag between the seats. And airbag count does not track crash score, the two best adult results here belong to SUVs that start at six airbags, while two of the five with seven as standard have no Bharat NCAP result at all.

Nine electric SUVs in India offer seven airbags, and the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is the cheapest at Rs 16.19 lakh, with the full set on its entry Delta variant. The VinFast VF6 from Rs 18.19 lakh, the VinFast VF7 from Rs 22.99 lakh, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella and the BYD Atto 3 also fit seven to every variant. The Tata Harrier EV and the Mahindra BE 6 SPORTEQ, XEV 9S and XEV 9e reserve the seventh for upper trims.

Six airbags are now standard on most electric SUVs, so the seventh is the clearest marker of extra protection. It is almost always a driver knee airbag, which keeps the legs away from the steering column in a frontal impact. One car here does something different.

Key takeaways

  • Seven airbags means the usual six, two front, two front side and two curtain, plus one more.
  • Five models fit seven to every variant: the e Vitara, VF6, VF7, Urban Cruiser Ebella and Atto 3. Four reserve them for higher trims.
  • The BYD Atto 3's seventh is a front centre airbag between the seats, not a knee airbag. It does a different job.
  • "Seven airbags" on a brochure describes the model, not your variant. Three of the nine here start at six.

Where the seventh airbag sits, and why it matters

A driver knee airbag deploys from the lower dashboard and stops the driver's knees striking the steering column in a frontal crash. It is the seventh airbag on eight of the nine SUVs below.

A front centre airbag deploys between the two front seats and stops the driver and front passenger hitting each other in a side impact. It protects both occupants rather than one, and it covers a crash type the standard six leave open. The Atto 3 is the only car here that fits one.

Neither replaces the body structure or the seatbelts. A crash rating tests all of it together, which is why the Bharat NCAP column below sits next to the airbag count rather than instead of it.

The nine in detail

1. Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, from Rs 16.19 lakh

The cheapest seven-airbag electric SUV by a clear margin, and the entry Delta gets the same set as the top Alpha. Maruti's brochure confirms the count on all three variants: Delta at Rs 16.19 lakh, Zeta at Rs 17.94 lakh and Alpha at Rs 19.99 lakh.

The seventh is a driver knee airbag. Also standard on every variant: stability control with hill hold, ABS with EBD and brake assist, disc brakes at all four wheels, tyre pressure monitoring, multi-collision braking, an SOS emergency call button, an electronic parking brake and ISOFIX. The 5-star rating of 31.49 and 43 covers all three variants.

Level 2 assistance and the 360-degree camera are Alpha only, so the cheapest way to seven airbags here does not include driver assistance.

2. VinFast VF6, from Rs 18.19 lakh

Seven airbags across Earth, Wind and Wind Infinity, plus a 360-degree camera and blind spot detection on every variant, which is a generous standard list. Stability control, tyre pressure monitoring and ISOFIX throughout. Level 2 assistance arrives on the Wind.

Its 5-star rating covers all three variants, though the adult score of 27.13 out of 32 is the lowest of the rated cars here and sits just above the five-star threshold.

3. VinFast VF7, from Rs 22.99 lakh

Seven airbags on all five variants, with the curtains covering both rows. Stability control, blind spot detection and an electronic parking brake with auto hold are standard; Level 2 with lane centering and auto lane change comes from the Wind.

It has the strongest child protection score of any electric SUV in India at 45.25 out of 49.

4. Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella, from Rs 23.60 lakh

Seven airbags standard, and its one currently priced variant, the E3, also carries a full Level 2 suite: adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, a pre-collision system, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, with a panoramic 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring, ISOFIX and an electric parking brake.

Bharat NCAP has not tested it, so there is no independent crash score to set against the equipment.

5. Tata Harrier EV, from Rs 24.29 lakh

The first of the cars where the seventh airbag costs extra. Six are standard; the knee airbag arrives on the Fearless+ 65 at Rs 24.29 lakh and runs up through the Empowered QWD 75 Stealth at Rs 30.04 lakh.

Every one of those variants pairs it with a 360-degree camera, a driver doze-off alert, stability control with after-impact braking, tyre pressure monitoring, disc brakes all round and an electronic parking brake with auto hold. Level 2 assistance needs the Empowered 75. The crash score is the best available: a perfect 32 out of 32 and 45 out of 49.

6. BYD Atto 3, from Rs 24.99 lakh

The exception on this list. Its seventh airbag is a front centre airbag deploying between the front seats, so it protects the driver and front passenger from each other in a side impact rather than protecting the driver's legs in a frontal one. Fitted to Dynamic, Premium and Superior.

A 360-degree camera, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring are standard; the full Level 2 suite is Superior only. Bharat NCAP has not tested it.

7. Mahindra BE 6 SPORTEQ, Rs 26.95 lakh

Seven airbags on the FOUR, Launch Edition and FE FOUR, all three at the same price, with a 540-degree camera view, individual tyre pressure monitoring, stability control and disc brakes all round. Level 2+ assistance with five radars and a camera on the FOUR and Launch Edition.

Read the rating carefully here. The BE 6's 5-star result, 31.97 out of 32 and 45 out of 49, was awarded in January 2025, and Bharat NCAP's applicability list names the One B59, Two B59, Three B59 and Three B79 variants. The SPORTEQ variants are not on that list. The score tells you about the car the SPORTEQ is derived from, not about the SPORTEQ itself.

8. Mahindra XEV 9S, from Rs 27.85 lakh

The only three-row electric SUV here with seven airbags, on Pack Three at Rs 27.85 lakh in seven-seat form and Pack Three Above at Rs 29.95 lakh. Level 2+ assistance with blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and highway assist comes with them, along with a 360-degree camera and individual tyre pressure monitoring.

No Bharat NCAP result.

9. Mahindra XEV 9e, from Rs 27.90 lakh

Seven airbags on Pack Three Select and Pack Three. Both get Level 2 assistance with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera, a driver monitoring camera, tyre pressure monitoring, stability control, ISOFIX and an electronic parking brake. Blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and highway assist are Pack Three only.

A perfect 32 out of 32 for adults and 45 out of 49 for children, and the tested variant was a Pack Three.

What to check before you buy

Treat "seven airbags" on a brochure as a question. Ask for the variant-wise safety sheet and confirm the count on the exact trim, because three of the nine models here start at six.

Then check two further things. Where does the seventh airbag sit? A knee airbag and a centre airbag solve different problems. And does the rating cover your variant? Bharat NCAP publishes that separately from the score, and the BE 6 SPORTEQ shows it is not a formality.

If seven airbags only appear on a trim beyond your budget, a cheaper SUV that fits them as standard is usually the better buy than a pricier one where they are an upgrade.
